Jude has spent the whole twenty one years of his life running. From what, he wasn't quite sure. His mother tried to keep him safe; a low profile, a constant move on the horizon, a week's pay always stashed away. She tried to instill in him that he was special somehow, though would never elaborate. He never felt different. He was so completely normal and vanilla that he wondered if it had all been in her head. But then she was murdered and all he saw was a running silhouette of a man as his mother said three final words to him. Three words that changed his whole being.
Never stop running…
Now he's semi-settled into a big town. The college is huge and easy to blend into. It's been three months since he had to move because 'Biloxi', as he calls the man who killed his mother, found him once more.
Then Marley, an eighteen year old girl who is as infuriating as she is blissfully ignorant of her gorgeousness, smashes into his car with hers. Then smashes into his life as he realizes that whatever it is he has that Biloxi wants, she has it, too. And now, they're after them both.
Review:
Shelly Crane is an excellent writer. I liked her Significance series and knew I had to read this when I saw the cover & synopsis. Smash Into You grabbed me from the very beginning. I couldn't put the kindle down for the first half. I read into the night because I was so into Jude and Marley's story!
It's really obvious from the beginning that Jude has some deep secrets. The story gradually unveils them, but basically Jude has been on the run for a long time. He does his best not to get attached to anything or anyone. He doesn't want anyone to get attached to him either. He has always traveled alone but he is put into a situation that leaves him unable to leave Marley behind without putting her safety in jeopardy.
I really grew attached to both characters and loved them together, but most of all, I loved them individually. There's a big twist to this story and I have to be honest...I didn't like it. It's a personal issue though. I've never liked any books or movies that lean in this direction even a little bit. I don't know what my problem is because I'm pretty sure most people are going to love the twist. I can't figure out a way to vaguely tell you what to expect without giving it away...
Anyway, overall, I was impressed with the story and the writing. I wish I could have loved the twist, because I'm pretty sure this is going to be a 5 star read for most people. I rate based on my personal feelings though and as much as I loved the writing, I didn't love the twist. So, personally, I have to give it 3.5 stars. The first half was easily 5 stars for me, so keep that in mind!!
